Our
Beginnings
The Blount County Children's Home was started in 1894 by a group of
women involved in the WCTU movement, going from door to door asking
each family to donate a dime to care for the orphans in the county.
Over
the years, the Home has evolved along with societial changes from
an orphanage to a residential treatment center. We have recently
been forced to close our therapeutically based behavior modification
residential services to teenage girls, ages 13-18, who were in the
custody of the State of Tennessee, removed primarily for abuse and
neglect. This closure was forced by a lack of available contracts
with the East Tennessee Department of Children's Services. The children
we have historically worked with in our residential program are
now being placed in foster homes through out East Tennessee.
We
have expanded our Operation Success, family preservation program
for males and females, ages 5-18. The goal of this program is to
help families whose children have been identified as being at risk
for removal. We are still working on the completion of our new building
and will be offering this space to young ladies who have aged out
of the foster care system at age 18, but need a safe, inexpensive
place to live while pursuing their education and working at a job.
The hope is that we will be able to help these young adults continue
to build the skills necessary to move from the child welfare system
to being a healthy, contributing citizen in our community.
